Jake Starts School by Michael Wright
Jake has a fear of the first day of school. In fact, he is so afraid that his parents have to spend the day at school with Jake clinging to them. By the end of the day Mrs. Moore has won Jake over and you know he will be ready for school the next day.
I love this book! It is funny and has an easy rhyme. The illustrations are perfect too.
Also check out "Jake Stays Awake." You'll be glad you did.

The Giver by Lois Lowry
Jonas is a twelve year old who lives in a controlled society. There seems to be no conflict, no personal decisions to make ,such as, what to eat, or wear.
At the annual ceremony when "The Twelves" receive their assignment for their life's work, Jonas is given a special job. He soon learns how order is maintained in this perfect society.
I like this story because it is so complex yet told in such simplicity.
